Using ChatGPT to generate workout plans
ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM) based chatbot from the company OpenAI which has been trained on the Internet (has all the information in it’s memory).
ChatGPT has a huge number of uses but recently I have been using it to create workouts. I do that by simply asking a question such as:
“Give me a 30 minute workout, involving squats and press ups”
You can tweak your request to ChatGPT to modify the output. For example:
- You can give it your details like age, height, weight and training goals.
- If you have some equipment you can ask it to create a workout around that equipment.
- If you have an area you want to focus on, such as upper body or legs you can add that to the Prompt (what you ask it).
- You can specify a time limit, warm up / down.
If you aren’t happy with the output you can ask it further questions until you improve it. For example, remove squats and add burpees!
As I have been doing this I have learnt a few things. You need to be careful to adjust the output to take into account your own fitness needs in the workout. For example, ask it to include an appropriate amount of warm up and stretching. In addition, you want it to remember your profile each time you ask it for a workout.
This can be done just by saving your details and using them when you prompt the chatbot or another alternative is to sign up for a paid plan and use what is known as a “Custom GPT” which will remember some information you give it each time you use it.
