  • The Port Elliot Festival

    July 20, 2012

The Stromatolite crew took a long drive down to the Port Elliot festival in Cornwall. We camped in the grounds of a stately home. We roamed about the festival listening to talks (like about foraging, see below), enjoying live music and recitals. The most memorable was the poetry of John Cooper-Clarke. Foraging workshop ran by Robin Harford at Port Eliot Festival 2012 as part of the Idler Academy http://www.eatweeds.co.uk/ migrated from WeQuest research blog August 3rd, 2012 4:34am_:_

  • The Dunwich Dynamo

    July 10, 2012

The Dunwich Dynamo is an annual semi-organised, through-the-night bicycle ride from London Fields park in Hackney, London, England to Dunwich on the Suffolk coast. The distance is approximately 112 miles (180 km). It is free to enter and quite popular. The last time I participated there were over 1000 riders. People gather at London fields and then set off when they are ready. Some people are treating it like a race and trying to get the distance done in the fastest time.

  • Collaborative Filmmaking in Armenia

    April 8, 2012

In April I went to Armenia to spend three weeks with a friend I met through the online service: Couchsurfing in order to learn about filmmaking and photography, conduct some interviews, and share his way of life. It was a prototype of how Couchsurfing extends beyond the remit of simply using an online service as a means of somewhere to stay into a space where a learning process can emerge.

  • Using iPhone for Adventure

    February 26, 2012

I recently got hold of an iPhone 3 because a friend’s phone smashed so I fixed it using parts from Ebay. The reason I am talking about the iPhone and not any other type of smartphone is because it is so ubiquitous and the platform itself is the most technologically advanced. What can you do with an iPhone 3 on an adventure? Features Compass Its got a compass which works through something called The ‘Hall’ affect.

  • Ring of Kerry, Ireland

    February 1, 2012

I flew with S to the Ring of Kerry. I took my Soviet Zenit camera with me. I shot footage for a “remaking” project I was doing at Goldsmiths. In this case the footage was all about natural processes, erosion, abandoned objects, a passage from human built landscapes to natural landscapes. I created a short film and played around with the sound effects. For example, I cut the sound of the burning moorland and overlaid it with the sound of traffic and rain in Newcross.

  • Working and Travelling in Dubai, UAE and why it blew me away

    November 1, 2011

On the 5th October I flew to Dubai, UAE to work on exhibition stands at the Gitex technology trade-shows in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. I returned to Dubai on 27th. This was a great opportunity to finance my Goldsmiths university course, get a change of scenery and be paid to travel somewhere. At first I would have thought Dubai wouldn’t appeal to me but there were many reasons to be intrigued.

  • Guest Post: Leon McCarron - From New York to Hong Kong collecting peoples stories - on travelling alone

    October 10, 2011

I have always found bike touring to be an intensely personal and introspective endeavour. Journeys with companions have been a lot of fun, and I definitely owe my love of adventure cycling to early trips with friends around the U.K and Europe. As I rode further and longer though, I began to wonder what it was I was hoping to take from a multi day bike ride. Sure, fun is always an important issue, but there’s something else that happens, or can happen when touring.
