• Adventure Mountain biking on the Island of Korcula, Croatia

    February 5, 2017

When I was bike guiding in Croatia, there were a couple of guests who came out called Rob and Rachel. On one big day ride we went out and headed east across the island. At about this time through the season I was starting to explore further afield into the Island away from the normal routes and offered this as an alternative during the day rides as an ‘adventure ride’ in which I explained to people they should expect some exploring.

  • 5 adventure / survival themed computer games

    February 5, 2017

Since I went to Scouts as a child I always had an interest in survival skills. Perhaps its the doomsday outlook about the future in the media or the consumerist society where you buy everything you need rather than having the skills to do it yourself. Everyday life doesn’t offer much opportunity to actually use these skills. Even on my adventure travels I only used survival skills a handful of times.

  • Loosing a Ski at the Top of a Mountain in Armenia

    February 4, 2017

Having cycled to the Caucasus, I arrived in Armenia, spring 2008 and was staying with some Couchsurfers, Max and Irene. Max suggested we go skiing in the nearby mountains. I felt a little dubious because I didn’t want to get injured but I couldn’t resist. Max’s friend turned up in a Nissan 4x4 and we piled in. He drove fast up the highway, the car flying along in a jet stream of cold air.

  • What is the Best Process for Photography - Workflow and Technology?

    February 4, 2017

Since I started taking photos, I have amassed thousands. Especially since 2007, when I first got a decent camera and went travelling. Whilst travelling, I used SD cards and each time I got to an internet connection I would go through the photos I had taken since the last time I was at an internet connection, choose the ones I considered to be highlights and uploaded them onto Flickr. I believe I also backed up the images onto a hard disk and CDs.

  • Mountain Biking Trail Discovery Ride in Tbilisi

    February 4, 2017

Originally written 2009, updated 2017. Living in Tbilisi, Georgia 2009, I converted my touring bike into a mountain bike and spent an afternoon exploring. I rode rode out of Tbilisi towards Kojori and turned off the road down a dirt track into a gorge with a river flowing down a crease in a huge slab of granite. At some point there had been a road bridge over the river but that had long since been reduced to a crumbling sculpture of red brick invaded by a small plants, weeds and grass growing out of the mortar.

  • Buy Cheap or Expensive Clothes?

    February 4, 2017

Everyone has to buy clothes. With the prevalence of department stores like Primark that sell cheap clothes, the question is whether it is false economy to buy cheap. More and more brands, even ‘higher end designer brands’, are producing clothes in the same dodgy factories and there have been numerous stories of poor industry practices that have shown stores up. For example, this story demonstrates the use of sweat shops by some of the best known high street stores.

  • How to Observe and Document Evidence of Climate Change

    February 4, 2017

Back in 2001 I studied Environment, Economics and Ecology at York University. At the time the environment was a hot topic and it seemed like there would be a great push seen in the world to help to protect it for generations to come. The course was varied in content ranging from mathematical and chemistry methods to geography and management. There was a lot of data supporting observations of damaged aspects of the environment such as the atmosphere, habitat or wildlife populations.

  • Best Drones Review for Aerial Filmmaking

    February 4, 2017

What is a drone? An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone, unmanned aircraft system (UAS), or by several other names, is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard. What are they for? Drones have become a lot more popular in recent years due to the ability to get another angle on filming. Particularly with action sports and adventure films where the landscape in context is especially beautiful. Drones offer the ability to follow the subjects and show them in the terrain.

  • Expedition Preparation Tips

    February 4, 2017

To me an expedition means: exploring, new ideas and experimentation. It can offer a great deal of learning potential. An expedition usually requires planning, because it might involve going to an unusual place or doing extraordinary activities. This may require training, special visas, or specialist equipment. Nevertheless, the following rules of thumb will hopefully help you to ensure that you have the basics covered for a successful trip: Have a clear goal.
