Tips to Start Paddling in the UK to Explore a Huge Network of Waterways

You’ll need a license. Members of British Canoeing and Canoe Wales who get Canal and River trust membership included. BCU membership includes a licence to paddle on 5000km of Britain’s navigations and canals and also third party liability insurance of up to £10 million.-

Talk to your local BCU ‘Access Officer’ about where you can canoe locally. Many rivers and waterways in the UK are private and the BCU works to negotiate access agreements.-

Don’t go canoeing by yourself, and learn from someone more experienced that you. If necessary take lessons. Consider the BCU qualification courses or find an approved club. There are over 3,000 miles of canal to explore in the UK and they are a good place to learn.-

Choose your equipment. You can often rent it or there are plenty of reviews and information online.-

Brush up your paddling knowledge by watching some videos online!-

When choosing a river route check the International Grading System 1-6 with grade 1 representing calmer rivers.-
