Travel Philosophy: The Basic Rules of the Road

On the road, you pick up a few tricks that create opportunities. Usually you are more needy out there, by yourself or a small group in an unfamiliar place and you need to be able to trust and use the network of people and things around you. A few things that served me well on my travels (found recently in an old notebook). ![Rules of the road](http://www.andrewwelch.info/sites/default/files/rules-of-the-road-light.jpg) - Accept invitations more readily - Trust pretty much everyone (give benefit of the doubt) - Be willing to eat whenever you get hungry (or are given food) - Sleep whenever you find a place - Sometimes disregard maps and use a compass to navigate or trust the directions of others - Ask people for directions, food, water, shelter, information - Get off the main roads and explore the small side roads - Go slower and be more patient - Pay attention to the moment in hand rather than focusing on the destination
